The Philippine officials have been speaking to US legislators to bring up the country’s concerns about a US bill against business process outsourcing. Gregory Domingo, Trade Secretary said that the Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Cuisia has been speaking to US legislators to lobby against the bill that would have a negative impact on the BPO industry here.
Domingo told the reporters that the president also says that kind of threat is also happening in every presidential in the United States. He saw this in the year 2004, 2008 and this 2012. Domingo said that a bill has been filed in the US Congress proposing to make companies that have call centers overseas ineligible for grants and guaranteed loans from the federal government. It is also proposes a $10,000 a day penalty on the US call center that fail to report its relocation to an offshore location within 60 days to the labor department.
The call center operators will be required to identify their location. Callers will also be allowed to choose an operator who is base in the US. President Barack Obama proposed several tax measures aimed at encouraging American companies to bring jobs back home which spells bad news of the Philippines BPO industry that heavily relies on US based clients. Most American companies have been outsourcing their call center services to the Philippines and India, since wages here much lower than in the US.
