America’s fourth-largest bank by assets has started to transfer some of its non-core, business support activities to the Philippines in spite of the US anti-outsourcing bill. For five years, the firms would then be ineligible for any direct or indirect US federal loan guarantees for five years. The bill would also require contact center staff to disclose their location to US consumers, US consumers that would be given the right to be routed to a US-based call hub upon request.

In year 2010, the business process outsourcing industry has estimated that 90,000 new jobs will be created as the companies abroad continue to seek lower costs and tap the Philippines for skilled workers. The industry association head Oscar Sanez noted that the target new jobs is higher than the 74,000 actual jobs created in 2009. The Malaysia based computer whiz Arlene Teodoro packed his bags and flew home to the Philippines, going due to the tide in an improverished country that sends million of workers abroad. He leave his family and friends last 2008 in search of a decent job overseas, the 35 year old bachelor says that he is back for good because his skills are suddenly in big demand amid a business process outsourcing boom.
Arlene Teodoro said that nothing compares to being back in the Philippines. He is part of a 30 strong computer science class at a Manila University in the early 1990s.

The homegrown business process outsourcing firm SPi Global Holdings, Inc. is set to open an office in Latin America to cater to Spanish-speaking customers mostly in the United States. Maulik Parekh and Chief Executive office of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. unit says in a press briefing, Mr. Parekh, they cannot disclose the exact location but it will be a 200 people operation. The expansion comes on top of its network of offices already existing in Vietnam, India the United States and Europe manned by a total of 14,000 employees. Mr. Parekh said that they are also looking at China as a potential location or partner, since it is becoming a strong competition in attracting non-voice BPO firms. He clarified that most of the operations will continue to be conducted in the Philippines despite the spate of expansion abroad. He said about the 14,000 employees worldwide, 11,000 are in the Philippines that despite of the current and planned expansion, bulk of the employees will always be from the country.
He said that the flow wherein most will be from the Philippines. For instance, the dense has recently added 900 new seats in its facility in Dumaguete and also 20% more seats in its facility in Iloilo. The non-voice transactions consist of 67% of the firm’s income while the 33% voice transactions. BPO non-voice transactions include supporting finance, accounting and procurement services and other industry peculiar services while voice transactions refer to call center services.
Mr. Parekh says that the SPi Global’s non-voice transactions are mostly industry-specific concentrated on health care, interactive markets, content solutions or publishing. The developments should support the firm’s targets of hitting 14% growth in revenues. The revenues from non0voice transactions are seen to grow by 16%-17% and profits from voice transactions are seen to grow by a little below 14%.
According to Mr. Parekh, the trend globally is the BPO market, it getting more competitive with the revenues growing 20%-25% year on year. A foreign private equity firm has infused $50 million into Integreon Philippines is an Ayala-led outsourcing outfit to help the latter expand its operations. The Integreon President Erik Tabuena stated the United Kingdom-basef Actis would get two seats on the board of Integreon as a result of the investment in a press briefing. Mr. Tabuena said that they are going to pursue expansion plans and part of the investment would go to a planned second site here in the Philippines. He said that the Integreon is planning to double its work force of 200 here in the Philippines and 2,000 around the world. A new integreon building will be built in Metro Manila.
With the passage of Actis, listed conglomerate Ayala Corp.’s stake in Integreon will frop to 56% from 86% Ayala Corp will keep three seats on the board. An Integreon nominee and an independent director will occupy two seats. The Chief Executive of Ayala’s Business Process Outsourcing, Fred I. Ayala investment arm LiveIt Solutions Inc., stated the company continues to regard the Business Process Outsourcing sector as a good area for investment.
